Many people have decided to make the switch from store-bought kibble to a raw diet or BARF diet for German shepherds. If you have been considering this, and would like to make a switch. Here is the recipe I use.
- It is best to make enough to last a couple of days. Since this can be a time-consuming process.
- I buy fresh chicken quarters. They seem to be the perfect portion. If I feel like its more than my dog needs. I will cut the quarters in half and just give them a thigh or a couple of legs. This is given to them raw. My dogs like them thawed out and not frozen.
- On top of the chicken quarter. I take the following ingredients and blend them together. I then pour them over it.
- Fresh Spinach leaves
- Fresh Carrots
- Fresh Celery
- Fresh Broccoli (not too much; may cause some bad gas)
- Fresh Blueberries
- Fresh Apples (without the seeds)
- Natural Peanut Butter
- Canned Pumpkin (not the pie filling)
- Raw Chicken Gizzards
- Raw Chicken Liver (just a couple of pieces)
- Cottage Cheese
- Cooked White Rice
- Organic Egg (eggshell included)
- Salmon Oil
- Red Cell Supplement for Canines
- Oatmeal
All of these ingredients can be included or alternated in a Raw Diet for German shepherds. This will create a paste which will stick real well with the chicken quarter. I usually put a hand full of each vegetable and fruit. As much as the blender can handle. Place a couple of gizzards and livers in the blender. For the cottage cheese. I add 1 tbsp. for each serving I’m making.
*You should always consult your Veterinarian before making the switch to a Raw Diet for German shepherds! The Ingredients listed above are for my personal recipe to feed my dogs a Raw Diet for German shepherds. This post in no way implies that a person should follow the same recipe or switch to a Raw Diet for German shepherds without first seeking professional advice to do so.
You will have to adjust how much you give your dog according to its weight and eating habit. I guarantee the bowls will be licked clean and not one morsel of food left. This makes it easier to clean out the dog bowls. The bowls need to be cleaned immediately.
You can also add different foods if you like. Make sure none of the foods are toxic to dogs. Here is a list of some foods that dogs should never eat!
List of Toxic foods:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Apple seeds
- Apricot pits
- Avocados
- Cherry pits
- Chocolate
- Coffee
- Garlic(small amounts of garlic powder will help with fleas, but too much can be toxic)
- Grapes
- Hops
- Macadamia nuts
- Moldy foods
- Mushroom plants
- Mustard seeds
- Onions and onion powder
- Peach pits
- Potato leaves and stems (green parts)
